Marí Peté to Perform Bilingual Pop-up Poetry

Fans of acclaimed poet and KZN Literary Tourism writer, Marí Peté, should take note of her upcoming performances of “Step Through”, a bilingual pop-up poetry event with sketches by Dina Cormick.

Date: 4 September 2016

Time: 15:00 – 16:00

Location: Pierneef Theatre, Pretoria.

Details: The poet steps us through imaginary spaces wherein she speaks her poems. She uses transitional musical snippets, playing out elements from the poems — pegging delights, dreams and sorrows alongside exhibited sketches and poems.

A second pop-up performance will also be done on Tuesday, 6 September at 17.30 at The Emperor’s Palace, Oliver Tambo.

 

About the Poet:

At the 2010 Poetry Africa Festival, Marí Peté’s opening night contribution was amongst those mentioned as exemplary by the Mail & Guardian. Her poems were published for the first time in 1983 in Tydskrif vir Letterkunde. Before Step through Marí published two bilingual poetry collections — Amytis (2007) and Begin (2002). She performed poems from these collections at the London Book Fair, Woordfees in Stellenbosch and theKirkcudbright Arts Festival in Scotland. With Bianca Bothma, Marí was editor of Art for Humanity’s book Women Artists and Poets Advocate Children’s Rights.

Born in 1964, Marí grew up on the Highveld of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. She studied at the Universities of Pretoria; KwaZulu-Natal; and the Freestate. She worked at the University of Cambridge, England from 1992-1993, and has since been working as eLearning specialist at the Durban University of Technology.
