Q: Tell us about yourself….
I am Uyanda Rampen, 19 years old. I live in Umlazi Township with my mom and my dad. I love writing poetry because it helps me let go of the feelings inside me. I started writing poetry when I was in primary school at Engilosi.
Q: What inspires you to write poetry?
My surroundings and experiences I go through in life are my main driving forces in my writing. Ever since I was diagnosed as an asthmatic patient, my life has taken a turn; it has been a wonderful life I have lived. With my story as a young girl from the township living with asthma, I hope to inspire people who are in same condition as me.
Q: What do you hope to achieve in life?
I hope to achieve my degree in the course that I am currently studying, which is Marketing Management at Coastal College.
Q: In closing, what can you say about the youth of South Africa?
The youth of South Africa has a lot of dreams to achieve and lot of opportunities which allow them to be who they want to be. I would love to see them prosper in all their dreams that they hope to achieve. Unlike our fellow youth in some countries in Africa which don’t pay the youth enough attention, I would like to say I am happy to be a South African citizen. I have written lot of poems about my country and the youth of Mzansi. I love this place!

Let me feel the beat, and let my
Feelings take over.
Let me dance to freedom
Let me celebrate my freedom
Do you call this wisdom? or I’m just dom!
This is my passion. Look at my passion
Look at my expression, you are my inspiration
My peers, new generation
This is me, I’m dancing to freedom
I am exposing my feelings through dance
I am showing my emotions, through dance
I am free, come get some tea! I want some of
Of that PEACE! As I dance to freedom
I rejoice as the rainbow nation.
