Grey Street Writers Tour for SIT

Grey Street Writers Tour for SIT

On Tuesday we took a group of American students enrolled in the Reconciliation Program at the School for International Training on the Grey Street Writers Tour. For many, it was the first time during their stay in Durban that they had ventured down to Grey Street and most seemed genuinely interested in the area and writers.

We were joined by cultural expert Suria Govender who provided fascinating anecdotal and historical information on the Indian community in South Africa and on Grey Street, where she lived as a child. A series of readings by Suria in the places that inspired the text really brought the writing to life for the participants.

The tour was extended slightly with a trip into Warwick Triangle where we visited the Islamic Cemetery, the herbal market and a restaurant serving a dish of cow’s head and dumpling, a traditional Zulu delicacy that one adventurous student was keen to try.
