Death and Fairy Tales

In the Year of the Humanities, the Peter-Weiss-Stiftung is organising six
readings and discussion events in castles and graveyards. The themes are
“Fairy Tale and Death”. Well-known actors will present texts, which will
then be discussed. They will open up new and exciting perspectives on the
humanities and their potential.

Entry to all events is free.


Following the discussions, the opportunity will be available to continue
the debate in the discussion forum of the homepage of the
Peter-Weiss-Stiftung.
The first ten participants on the forum can win an audiobook.

Saturday 2nd June 2007, 3-6pm
1) Death and the Cruel 20th Century
Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof Berlin / the Literaturforum at the
Brechthaus
Sophie Rois and Samuel Finzi will read texts by Anna Seghers and Heiner
Müller.
After that, Prof. Sonat Hart, Prof. Thomas Macho and Prof Wolfgang
Wippermann will lead the discussion.

Saturday 9th June 2007, 3-6pm
2) The Death of God in Times of Religious Revival
Fürstengruft in Weimar / Lecture Theatre at the Goethe Museum
Petra Hartung and Friedhom Ptok will read extracts from Goethe’s Faust and
Friedrich Nietzsche’s The Gay Science.
The following discussion will feature professor Wilhelm Gräb, Prof Gabriele
Steckmeister and Dr Daniel Weidner * along with other panel members.

Saturday 23rd June 2007, 7-10pm
3) Fairy Tales and Modernity
Castles and Gardens of Dresden / Banqueting Hall of the Palais im Großen
Garten.
Frank Arnold and Margarita Broich will read texts by Irmtraud Morgner and
Ingeborg Bachmann. Then Prof. Walter Schmitz, Dr Alfred Messerli and Dr
Wolfgang Lange will discuss them.

Saturday 30th June 2007, 7-10pm
4) Lust and Love in Fairy Tales
Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart.
Michaela Steiger and Matthias Schwervenikas will read texts by Apuleius and
Joseph von Eichendorff.
The following discussion will feature Prof. Dietz-Rüdiger Moser, Dr Sandra
Kluwe and Jürgen Janning.

Sunday 15th July 2007, 3-6pm
5) Intercultural viewpoints in Fairy Tales
Schloss Biesdorf in Berlin.
Jule Böwe and Herbert Fritsch will read Nukanbuku and Komenbuku and Hansel
in the Ashes, Japanese and Alsatian variants on the “Cinderella” story.
Then, PD Dr Sabine Wienker Piepho, Dr Kathrin Pöge-Alder and Dr Kurt
Derungs will lead the discussion.

Saturday 28th July 2007, 3-6pm
6) Death and the Girls
Bergfriedhof in Heidelberg / Hilde-Domin-Saal of the Stadtbücherei
Heidelberg.
Astrid Gorvin and Matthias Schwervenikas will read from the poems of Hilde
Domin and from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
The following discussion will feature Prof. Thomas Anz, Prof. Astrid
Deuber-Mankowsky and Prof. Ute Jung-Kaiser.
Presenter: Marie Neumüllers.

The events will take place in the Year of the Humanities, in cooperation
with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. “Fairy Tales and
Death” is organised by the Peter-Weiss-Stiftung, a foundation for Art and
Politics.
