Dashen Naicker

Dashen Naicker was born in Durban, South Africa in 1986. He has performed at numerous events and festivals across the country, including Poetry Africa, the National Arts Festival, and the Inkundla Poetry Festival. In 2012 he was one of the participants at Ordsprak: Uppsala International Poetry Festival in Uppsala, Sweden.

In 2013 he was one of the poets at the Young Idea Congress in France. He is three-time winner of the Poetry Africa SlamJam, having won the event in 2010, 2012 and 2013. He was the runner up in 2011. In 2006 he won the inaugural Life Check All Elements Battle., Durban’s most prestigious hip hop event. His poem ‘Grammar Lesson’ was awarded second place for the Dalro Poetry Prize in 2012.

In 2006 he won the inaugural Life Check All Elements Battle, Durban’s most prestigious hip hop event. His poetry is featured in the The Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Anthology 2011, and in journals in South Africa, England, India, and the United States including New Coin, Wasafiri, and A Hudson View.

He holds an MA in Creative Writing from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, obtained under the supervision of renowned poet, Sally-Ann Murray. Naicker currently teaches in the Faculty of Writing and Rhetoric at the African Leadership Academy.
