Babanango

Babanango

Babanango is the name of a hill, a stream and a district in Zululand and there are many versions of how the name came about. Carel Birkby in "Zulu Journey" said the word meant "The Infant who Cannot Sit Up." Elsewhere it is translated as "Father, Where Are You?". But the most popular story of all is that many years ago a child was lost on the slopes of the mist- shrouded hill and when sit last she was found by an elder brother he shouted, "Ubaba, nango" – "Father, There she is." It is near the scene of the massacre of Piet Retief. (See also Emakuseni.)

EMAKUSENI: In the Mkumbane Valley on the banks of a tributary of the White Umfolozi River is Emakuseni, the site of one of Dingaan’s great kraals – emGungundlovu where Piet Retief and his Voortrekkers were massacred in 1838. The name is said to mean "the Place of the Sheep"
